Let's clarify. There is nothing in Gnome called "software manager." There is a system app called Software and a desktop function called Activities (upper-left) which is closely intertwined with Dashboard (lower-middle).
Checking a Gnome test box, Software seems to know nothing about Firefox. Activities does, as does Synaptic Package Manager. Software in Cinnamon (same app) also knows nothing about Firefox.
There's probably an explanation, but I never use software managers so don't know what the explanation might be.
