I've played around with what you have described without success. I believe I'm missing critical information. I'm pretty lost.
I know how you feel we all felt the same way when we started our own Linux journeys however, you've come to the right place, and we will help you to the best of our collective knowledge.
2. I don't understand what you mean when you mention `/boot/efi/*` being managed in a separate script. My `/boot` directory is in it's partition. Do I need to bother with this folder at all?
As for the /boot/efi folder (partition) all modern computers use a UEFI boot manager. This boot manager needs to be able to find the pieces of code it wants for your system to boot correctly. So this is why most modern operating systems GNU/Linux included will put hand-off code that the UEFI Boot manager can read and figure out the next steps for it to do its job and boot your computer.

What I'm trying to accomplish seems to be a multi-step process. Perhaps it's not fair for me to ask for help with something this involved in this venue. Are there any resources online? That you or anyone can point me to it?
No question is an unfair question as we can all learn from what others are doing or have done and adapt it to our unique situation. A forum or bulletin board or forum like Debian Users Forum is a great place to come if you are looking for help or have a helpful tidbit to share you are more than welcome to do so.
