Thought I'd give an update. Following this exchange, I looked for solutions in some possible config files tweaking, but realised it went well beyond my know-how.
I recently tried again to hook up the external display on my laptop, but this time through an HDMI to VGA adapter. It worked right out of the gate, dealing with the different aspect ratios without any functional issue. It seems that a more rudimentary video display controller was all I needed. The Flatron has no speakers anyway, so the lack of sound transmission doesn't matter.
