In order to try out different Desktop Environments, I would recommend to set up a Virtual Machine (KVM/QEMU) and install a Debian Live System of your choice there instead of installing any additional environments on your production machine. In case you're not content with the new environment, you can simply throw away the installation without messing up anything.
If you install with the standard Debian installer, you can also choose several environments at once. After install, you can choose one of them in the signon screen. For a try, installing from a Live system is easier.
