I have good news - Kernel 31 is installed properly and the machine boots straight into it. Kernel 21 is still there and I shall remove it as soon as K32 comes along.

A very big thank you to you all for being patient with me and guiding me to the solution.

Good to read you get it sorted, that is what I do as soon as the I see the new version upgrade installed I go with the apt autoremove --purge to get rid of the third kernel. I already know the kernel I am running is good and can be booted from in the many days I have been using it. There are not usually problems with the -?? minor version revisions on my machines they usually always just boot up and work until the next one comes along to do it all over again.
