Thank you for the advice: I was able to sign in with <CTRL><ALT><F3>. So it doesn't seem to be a password issue.
$df -h revealed that I have 39% free space on sda1 (the only partition)
The folders ~/.config/xfce4/ and ~/.config/session/ are both empty with $ls -a
